England Fans Want Ted Lasso to Lead the Team Instead of Southgate

England fans are in an uproar, calling for Ted Lasso to replace Gareth Southgate after a lackluster 1-1 draw with Denmark at Euro 2024. Frustrated supporters believe the fictional coach from the Apple TV show would breathe new life into the team.

One fan tweeted, “Ted Lasso could get a better tune out of these players,” while another quipped, “Lasso could manage a squad better than Southgate.” The sentiment was clear: many believe Lasso, played by Jason Sudeikis, has the charm and unconventional approach needed to revitalize the squad. One fan even asked, “Is Ted Lasso busy at the moment?”

Despite the calls for change, Southgate’s record outshines Lasso’s fictional one. Southgate boasts 59 wins from 97 games, a 61% win rate. Lasso’s character, meanwhile, has 60 wins from 115 games, resulting in a 52% win rate. Southgate’s actual achievements, however, seem lost on fans disheartened by recent performances.

Sudeikis, who portrays Lasso, attended a show premiere in July 2021 wearing a shirt with the names of Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, and Bukayo Saka—players who endured racial abuse after missing penalties in the Euro 2020 final. This gesture has endeared the character to fans, who see Lasso as a symbol of positivity and support.

The match in Frankfurt saw England miss the chance to top their group early. Serbia’s late equalizer against Slovenia left England needing a win to secure their place in the round of 16 as Group C winners. Harry Kane’s goal, his first in a group stage since 2018, was overshadowed by Morten Hjulmand’s equalizer, resulting in boos from the crowd.

Criticism of Southgate has been fierce. One fan tweeted, “Southgate would take the minus offer on the Chase and 100% wears safety goggles to mow the lawn.” Another added, “It’s so hard to make England’s players boring, but Gareth Southgate is utterly committed to his job.” The frustrations were palpable, with fans longing for a more dynamic and engaging approach.

After the match, Southgate acknowledged the team’s struggles, admitting, “We’re disappointed with the two performances we’ve had.” As England prepares for the group finale against Slovenia, the pressure is on for Southgate to turn things around and prove he can lead the team to success.
